Monte del Sol Charter School Admissions Lottery Guidelines
Please note that the Lottery Drawing took place on March 28th and the Guidelines below are here to help you understand what your child's lottery number means
New Mexico Charter School law requires that admission to Monte del Sol be decided by a lottery drawing. Each year, over 500 students apply for grades 7 through 12 so a lottery has proved an equitable way of creating a waiting list for admission.
Applications must be submitted online by 4:00 p.m. Friday, March 23, 2012 to be eligible for the drawing which will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28 in our Gathering Space. Attendance at the lottery drawing is optional and does not affect your childʼs chances of winning.
The drawing is done by computer sort which is projected onto a screen for those attending the drawing. Every student receives a random lottery number so you will see your child's first and last name on the Lottery Results list on the home page of our website with the lottery number next to the name.
Lottery results are posted on our website the day after the drawing. We do not mail results but will call you if we reach your childʼs lottery number. As we progress down the waiting list, we post a weekly update on the Admissions page.
If a space opens up during the school year, we call down the waiting list to see if you are interested in transferring to Monte del Sol for second semester. If your child does not get in this year please reapply next year for the new grade.
Siblings of current Monte del Sol students have priority placing ahead of number #1 in the lottery in each grade. Siblings of lottery-winning students must wait until a space opens up in their intended grade. A sibling is defined as a brother or sister living in the same household who has one or both parents in common; a half sibling or step sibling; or a child under court-ordered legal guardianship of parent(s) of a student currently attending Monte del Sol. Verification of sibling status is required.
Students with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) (Gifted and Special Education). New Mexico Charter School law requires that students with an IEP take their chance in a Charter School Admissions Lottery like all applicants. If your child with an IEP wins a place, please contact our Special Services Director at 982-5225 ext. 111 to discuss class accommodations and special needs.
Visiting, Observing and Shadowing Please come to one of the Open House evenings (dates above). Winning students can shadow for a morning (by appointment) in April or May, though there is no requirement to shadow. Call 982-5225 to arrange shadowing or observing.
ESTIMATED AVAILABLE PLACES IN EACH GRADE
7th Grade: Each year, we have about 300 applicants for 7th grade. We have about 50 available spaces after siblings have been placed, and those students will be offered a place the day after the drawing. If you are offered a place, please return our phone call within three days to accept or decline or to arrange shadowing. If a student declines we call the next one on the waiting list. In 2011, we reached #58 in the 7th grade drawing, but each year is different and some years we reach lottery numbers in the 60s or low 70s. If a space opens up during the school year we call down the waiting list. You can check your childʼs progress on the waiting list on our Admissions page or call the school office at 982-5225.
8th Grade: 8th grade has the least number of openings because the majority of our 7th graders will progress to 8th Grade next year. We wonʼt know the exact number of openings until after Registration in August, so if your child draws a low 8th grade lottery number (1 through 10) please stay in touch with us and check the waiting list updates on the Admissions page.
9th Grade: We will not know the exact number of openings until after Registration in August when we get an accurate count of returning students. If your child receives a low 9th grade lottery number (1 through 15) please check the waiting list updates on the Admissions page or call our office at 982-5225.
10th and 11th Grade: Reaching your childʼs lottery number does not necessarily guarantee a place at Monte del Sol as acceptance is also dependent upon the studentʼs readiness for the intended grade as indicated by the high-school transcript. We will not know the exact number of openings until after Registration in August when we get an accurate count of returning students.
12th Grade: Monte del Sol requires a minimum of 27 High School Credits to graduate (three more credits than the local public high schools) so students who win a place in our 12th grade lottery will need to have earned at least twenty-one credits which meet or exceed appropriate State requirements. Winning 12th grade applicants should meet with the Dean of Students with a copy of their transcript in hand.
