The Mission of Monte del Sol Charter School:School Plan

The mission of Monte del Sol Charter School is to challenge each member of its community, both youth and adult, to be a life-long learner and responsible community member or leader; and to support the education necessary for each individual to realize his or her potential.

History

Monte del Sol's charter was initially granted for five years in December 1999 and the school opened in August 2000 with 121 students in seventh and eighth grades.  Every year since then a new 7th grade of 60 students has entered the school and by the 2004-2005 school year we had a full complement of 360 students in grades 7 through 12.  The Class of 2005 was our first graduating class.

When Monte del Sol opened in the Fall of 2000, classes took place in the downtown Santa Fe Boys & Girls Club, and in January 2001 we moved into the Solana shopping center on Alameda St. where we stayed for two and a half years.  During that period, we successfully designed and built our own campus in the Nava Ade neighborhood on the south-western edge of town and moved in at the beginning of the 2003-2004 school year.  Monte del Sol's charter was renewed in June 2004 for another five years by the Santa Fe School District and renewal is in process now for the next five years.

How do we accomplish our mission?

To accomplish this, Monte del Sol Charter School will:

  • provide a small school so each individual is known;
  • acknowledge and celebrate the diversity of its members;
  • connect students with adult community members, including parents, through a dynamic mentorship program;
  • foster awareness of the world with international exchange and communication programs; and
  • embrace the arts, cultural activities and technology as a means of learning and expression.

Admission to Monte del Sol is through a lottery drawing which takes place in March each year. The lottery application period for school year 2010 to 2011 is now open.  Please go to the Admissions page for full details.
