Lottery Drawing
Open House #1
Open House
State Charter School law requires that admission to Monte del Sol be decided by a lottery drawing. Each year, we have over 500 students applying for grades 7 through 12, of which more than half are applying for 7th grade, so a lottery drawing has proved an equitable way of creating a waiting list for admission
When we receive your application your child's name is entered in the lottery database by grade. You may mail your application or bring it by the school office. To avoid possible mail delays, if you are applying any time after February 19 you must bring your application directly to our school office absolutely no later than 2:00 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 26.
The lottery drawing will take place at
The names are drawn beginning with 7th grade. The first name drawn is number one, the second name is number two, and so forth until all the names are drawn in each grade and every child receives a lottery number. The number drawn is your child's place on the waiting list. We must receive your application at our office by 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 26, 2010 to be eligible for the drawing.
Lottery results are posted the morning after the drawing on the front door of the school and on our home page at www.montedelsol.org We do not mail results. The number next to your child's name is his or her number on the waiting list. Even if your child draws a low lottery number, we cannot guarantee a space until there is an opening in that grade and we call to offer your child a place.
Our Charter calls for about 60 students in each grade. Current students move up each year, filling each grade, so there will only be an opening (in grades 8 to 12) if a student leaves Monte del Sol. Therefore, we may not know the number of openings until after Registration in mid August when we get an accurate count of returning students.
In addition, siblings of current students are offered places ahead of number #1 in each grade (see siblings below). If you have a low lottery number you are welcome to call the School Secretary any time to ask about progress on the waiting list: 982-5225 press 0.
See below for grade-by-grade details:
7th Grade Applicants: In 7th Grade, we typically have around 300 applicants including about twenty siblings of current students who are given priority placing ahead of number #1 in the lottery. Therefore, we will initially have about 40 openings and will call lottery numbers #1 to #40 the day after the drawing to offer those students a place. We ask that you return our call within three days to accept or decline. If a family declines the spot, we offer it to the next child on the list. In past years, we have reached 7th Grade lottery numbers in the fifties during May and in the sixties by the first week of school. If a child leaves during the school year, we continue down the lottery waiting list, but do not take new students after January.
8th Grade Applicants: Few students leave during Middle School, so we only reach low numbers in the 8th grade lottery most years after siblings have been placed.
9th, 10th and 11th Grade Applicants: In 9th, 10th and 11th grade, we may have more openings but will not know the number of openings until after Registration in August. In all grades, siblings are given priority placing ahead of number one in the lottery when a space opens up. Please note that reaching your child's name (in 10th & 11th grade) does not necessarily guarantee a place as acceptance is also dependent upon the student's readiness for the intended grade as indicated by the high-school transcript.
12th Grade Applicants: Monte del Sol requires a minimum of 27 High School Credits to graduate, so in addition to winning a place through our admissions lottery, students applying for our Senior year will need to have earned at least 20 credits by the end of their 11th grade year which meet the appropriate State requirements. 12th Grade applicants should submit the lottery application form and make an appointment with our college counsellor, Debby Casillas, 982-5225 ext. 433.
SIBLINGS:
Our Charter gives priority to siblings of current students ahead of number one in the lottery in each grade. However, like all applicants, siblings must enter the lottery and wait until a space opens up in their intended grade. In 7th grade there are typically about 20 siblings ahead of #1 in the lottery drawing.
Verification of relationship is required. A sibling is defined as a brother or sister living in the same household who have one or both parents in common, a half or step sibling, or a foster child or child under legal guardianship of parent(s) of student currently attending Monte del Sol.
If there is more than one sibling applicant in grades 8 to 12, the sibling who draws the lowest lottery number in the respective grade will be offered the first available opening.
ALL APPLICANTS If we reach your child's lottery number we will call you. Please return our call within three days to accept or decline. If we do not hear from you we may offer the place to the next on the waiting list. You are welcome to call at any time to find out the progress down the lottery list in any grade. Please call 505-982-5225 with your child's name and grade. Also, some years we will have openings in mid year and we will call you if we reach your child's name on the waiting list.
