Mathematics
Grade 7: Math 7
Students will study the following units: The World of Data, Fractions, Geometry, Proportion/Scale, Ratios/Rates and Scientific Notation. These units allow students to master the basic skills of fractions, decimals, percents in the context of real world mathematical settings. As a result of this course, students will be well prepared to take the next math course in the middle school sequence-- Pre-algebra or Algebra. Texts include Middle School Math, Course 2, and real life data sources such as almanacs, newspapers, magazines, blue prints, road maps, etc.
Pre-Algebra
The goals of the Pre-Algebra course are to develop mathematical skills to the point of being able to succeed in Algebra I by representing and analyzing mathematical situations and using mathematical models and quantitative relationships to compute fluently and accurately. Students will also be able to make reasonable estimates, recognize the values of mathematics in everyday life, use a variety of strategies in problem solving, interpret graphical and numerical data and solve linear equations. After taking Pre-Algebra, students will be well prepared to succeed in Algebra I.
Algebra I
This course is available to seventh grade students on very rare occasions, and only with recommendations from a variety of past instructors with data to support those recommendations.
Grade 8: Pre-Algebra
The goals of the Pre-Algebra course are to develop mathematical skills to the point of being able to succeed in Algebra I by representing and analyzing mathematical situations and using mathematical models and quantitative relationships to compute fluently and accurately. Students will also be able to make reasonable estimates, recognize the values of mathematics in everyday life, use a variety of strategies in problem solving, interpret graphical and numerical data and solve linear equations. After taking Pre-Algebra, students will be well prepared to succeed in Algebra I. Texts include Algebra for Everyone, Algebra ? by Saxon and Principles and Standards for School Mathematics.
Algebra I
This is a beginning algebra course which covers equalities, inequalities, polynomials, functions, systems of linear equations, graphs of linear equations and linear inequalities, radical expressions and the axioms of algebra. Emphasis is placed on the development of algebraic manipulative and problem-solving skills and the relating of mathematical concepts to each other. Students will also solve linear and quadratic equations by calculating and graphing. They will also recognize and interpret rates of change from graphical and numerical data. This is an accelerated course for eighth graders. Text include: Discovering Algebra, Algebra for Everyone, Principles and Standards for School Mathematics
