First Year Language is available to anyone who has not taken a second language. We believe that language is the vehicle to an understanding of the Spanish and Latino culture, and that learning how to speak, read, listen and write offers students entrance to the Spanish and Latino culture. Students will become familiar with basic grammatical concepts, as well as use conventional spelling and punctuation. Present tense verbs, infinitives, personal pronouns, basic syntax are examples of the skills that are developed in the first year. Textbooks, workbooks, and other media are utilized in the course.

Second year language is a continuation of the first year course with a further emphasis on developing the skills of reading, writing, and listening to effectively function in a second culture. Grammatical concepts go hand in hand with increased vocabulary and increased fluency in each of the four component areas. Emphasis on the past and future tense complements the use of the present.
