Grade 7 & 8: Fundamentals of Theatre
This course is a semester-long elective designed to provide exercises that offer students a wide variety of theatrical experiences. Students will be exposed to a broad background of theatrical training, including theatre history, acting fundamentals, playwriting styles and improvisation techniques. Students will work with material from classical and contemporary playwrights and develop their own directing, design, and writing styles. Acting techniques, character work, scene study, and theatrical vocabulary will be explored as students share their efforts with the school and the larger community during performances.
Grade 7 & 8: Music
This course is a semester-long elective designed to provide exercises that offer students a wide variety of musical experiences. These include learning how to hear and sing diatonic scales (do, re, mi, etc.), how to listen and write musical melodies, bass lines and harmonies, how to develop the ability to play guitar and keyboards in at least 3 different keys, then learn how to record melodies, etc. into computer software – "ProTools". Students will also learn to distinguish different cultural genres of music and their context.
Grade 7 & 8: New Mexico Arts
This course exposes students to the fundamentals of the traditional Northern New Mexican art form of retablo, bultos and box making. Traditional design techniques are employed including the fine art of gesso coverings and traditional paints and designs that reflect individual students design within a centuries old New Mexican art form. Students create retablos and boxes of their own as a result of this class.
Grade 7 & 8: Dance
Dance may be offered as an elective in fall 2003.
